Bob Dylan’s name is in the news with the biopic A Complete Unknown hitting theatres on Christmas Day, so Bob Dylan stories are popping everywhere. Here’s a good one, To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Late Night with David Letterman, NBC put on a show a show at Radio City Music Hall. The show had put together an all-star band for the night. It included Chrissie Hynde (guitar), Syd McGuinness (guitar), Steve Vai (guitar), Carole King (keyboards), Paul Schaffer (keyboards), James Brown (horn), Edgar Winter (horn), Doc Severinsen (trumpet), William E. Lee (bass), Anton Fig (drums), Jim Keltner (drums) and Roseanne Cash, Nancy Griffith, Emmylou Harris, Michelle Shocked, Mavis Staples (backup vocals). Yes, that is an impressive band, they were to back Dylan on the song Like a Rolling Stone. Apparently, Bob Dylan that he would appear on the show as just him and a Guitar and wasn’t happy about the arrangement. Paul Shaffer claims in his autobiography, that Dylan didn’t bother to sing during the rehearsals, and eventually walked out. He didn’t want to do Like A Rolling Stone, and he certainly didn’t want the all-star band. His performance that night was lackluster at best. David Letterman recalls the show in the video below, the actual performance is the second video.
Watch David Letterman recall the night a performance from Bob Dylan did not go according to plan.
