PHILADELPHIA — Approximately 350 passengers were evacuated when a Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) train caught fire in suburban Philadelphia, authorities said.

The fire started under the first car of the six-car train at the Crum Lynne Station in Ridley Park at approximately 6 p.m. ET, KYW reported.

According to SEPTA officials, the fire affected the Regional Rail train on the Wilmington-Newark line and had left Center City when there was a report of smoke, WTXF reported.

Service was halted for several hours but resumed shortly after 11 p.m., according to WPVI.

“I could smell a weird smoky, sulfury smell,” Cynthia Kayati, of Smyrna, told the television station. “I thought it was the train, normal stuff, but it was getting really strong especially as we got to Crum Lynne.”

No injuries were reported.

Several SEPTA buses arrived about 7:15 p.m. to take passengers to their destination, WTXF reported.

“Very quick action by our crews that helped allow this to be a safe outcome,” SEPTA spokesperson Andrew Busch told WPVI. “We don’t know where this started, just that it was in the area underneath the train and then obviously engulfed the train in flames.”

Busch said that SEPTA service has resumed on the Wilmington/Newark Regional Rail line. Amtrak service between Philadelphia and Wilmington has resumed as well, but there could be lingering delays, Amtrak said in a social media post.

Amtrak owns the track and SEPTA leases it, WTXF reported.
