Reflecting on “If You Leave” by O.M.D. and the lasting impact of Pretty In Pink

2. ANDIE, "PRETTY IN PINK": Back in the day, what girl didn't want Andie Walsh's (Molly Ringwald) '80s-tastic dress from the film "Pretty in Pink"? The character even made the outfit herself using a thrift-store gown and her co-worker's prom dress.

The late film director John Hughes brought many iconic movies to the big screen during the 80s. One of the most enduring has to be Pretty In Pink, starring Molly Ringwald, John Cryer, James Spader and Andrew McCarthy, among others.

While there are many memorable scenes in the film, the one that has really stuck with fans of the movie, is the finally when characters “Andie” and “Duckie” walk into the school prom. Everyone is watching and over the loud speakers O.M.D.'s “If You Leave” is playing.

In that moment, the song seemed to encapsulate not only the emotion of the film but what kids of the day were feeling. The feeling that teen love is fleeting and can be terribly painful. But, the song is about redemption and moving on.

Recently, Professor of Rock, Adam Reader, had the chance to sit down with Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphries of O.M.D. (Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark), to get the backstory behind the iconic song and movie scene.

Here’s the official video for the song, beautifully adorned with scenes from Pretty In Pink.
