Michael Jackson- Rest in Peace

It was in December of 1969, and I was not too long out of high school, working my dream job as a weekend DJ at 860 AM KONO.

A new record from Motown was on the KONO hitlist, from a family group from Gary, Indiana called the Jackson Five.

The intro to the song had an exciting, electric riff, and the high voice of the youngest Jackson brother, Michael sang the lead in a professional manner of a veteran musician.

Little did anyone know , as 1969 turned into 1970, and "I Want You Back" climbed the KONO Hit List to Number One, that young Michael would become the King of Pop and a music icon.

Fast forward a few decades...I'm at my dream job, afternoon drive on KONO 101.1 FM, and the news bulletins start to pour in : Michael Jackson collapses at home, Michael is in a coma, and finally the official word, Michael Jackson, the King of Pop is dead.

Remember Teen Canteen?

Do you remember Teen Canteen? Some of us around KONO got to talking about some of the great bands from San Antonio over the years, and the best place to hear those bands was a venue called the Teen Canteen.

When it comes to San Antonio bands, you may remember names such as Flash (featuring Chris Geppert who became Christopher Cross), Too Smooth,The Chayns, Swiss Movement and Sweet Smoke.

Theres a great website with pictures and information on San Antonio bands from the past and present at www.mikesbandarchive.com

Check it out and let me know what bands were your favorites. I would love to hear from you, PLUS, check out the 5@5 every weekday afternoon at 5, featuring San Antonio's Greatest Hits!

5@5 Artist a Grammy Winner and former S.A. Resident

During the 1980 5@5 recently, I realized that the guy we know as Christopher Cross is really former San Antonian Chris Geppert.

Yes, he is a Grammy winner and a graduate of Alamo Heights High School.

Chris had plently of Top Ten songs on the KONO hitlist, including "Sailing", "Ride Like the Wind" and "Arthur's Theme". Another great Christopher Cross song that always makes me think of my daughter is "Think of Laura".

Chris was playing for a local band, "Flash" before signing his solo contract with Warner Brothers, and releasing his Grammy winning self titled album in 1979. He is the only artist to personally receive all of the "Big 4" Grammies (Best Song,Record, Album and New Artist) in the same year.

I am wondering if any of you KONO listeners knew Chris Geppert in the early days?

I have a record player!

For the first time in years, I have a "record player" in my home. You know, a turntable. Because I am in an industry that frequently changes technology, I have been keeping up with that technology and have not owned a turntable or vinyl records for some time.

How did I come to have these antiques in my home? Well, first my daughter,Laura, got the vinyl record bug,and she infected her little brother, Steve Jr. with the disease.

So a couple of weeks ago, Steve Jr. comes home from a visit with his sister , very proud of his very first vinyl album. He showed me the cover art, then carefully took the album from it's cover and showed me the beauty of the music actually etched into the black vinyl record.

And I told him, "Yeah, I know! Welcome to the 70's"

So we had the record, and we had to get the turntable, and I can see lots of audio purchases in the future as our ears demand better and more expensive "old school" equipment.

You know what? It's kind of cool to see the younger generation embracing a technology we all loved so much and that brought us so much pleasure.
